Hotspots

How do I check out a device?

Call the library to reserve a hotspot or add yourself to the waiting list. Once a hotspot becomes available, you will be able to pick it up at that location.

Who can check out a device?

Anyone that has a valid, verified library card (excludes temporary or limited use library card types). If you don’t have a library card, you can apply in person at the library.

How long can I keep a hotspot?

You can borrow a Wi-Fi hotspot for one week. Renewal is not available for hotspots. Overdue hotspots will have internet access deactivated beyond their due date.

Where can I return a Wi-Fi hotspot?

A Wi-Fi hotspot must be returned to the Fullerton Public Library Circulation Desk where it was checked out. They CANNOT be returned in book drops. You must return the device with all the original packaging and accessories. Please fully charge the battery before you return the device.

How do I renew it?

Wi-Fi hotspots are non-renewable at this time.

What if I lose or return a Wi-Fi hotspot late?

If the hotspot is lost, please contact the library immediately. See the Library Fee Schedule for applicable fees:  https://fullertonlibrary.org/fines-fees

What if the device is lost, stolen, or damaged?

Please report the incident to the library where the device was borrowed. You will still be responsible for the replacement fee.

Can I reserve a hotspot?

Yes, you must call the library to be added to the waiting list. As soon as a hotspot becomes available and you are next on the list, you will be notified that it is available for pickup.

How much does it cost?

Borrowing and using the device is free! However, late fines or replacement charges may apply if the item is returned late or lost.

What if I need help with a Wi-Fi hotspot?

If you need help using a Wi-Fi hotspot, contact the library during open hours. You can also email the library using the Ask a Librarian webform.

Can I use the hotspot when I travel outside the United States?

No, the hotspots only work in the U.S.

Can I use the hotspot to make phone call or send/receive text messages?

No, the hotspots can only be used to connect to your Wi-Fi enabled devices, such as laptop and tablets.

If the hotspot prompts me to update the software or firmware, what should I do?

The hotspot periodically receives software updates from the service provider. You can accept the update, which may take a few minutes.

Is information about my Internet usage tracked by the Library or the service provider?

FPL does not have access to or collect specific usage data and does not provide patron information to the service provider.

Will I be asked for my personal information when I browse the internet using the hotspot?

FPL will not ask you any information when you browse the internet using the hotspot.

Content is not filtered by the hotspots, please be advised that it is the responsibility of the parent to monitor their children in their internet usage when utilizing these devices.

Do I need my library card number or to be logged into my library account when I browse the internet using the hotspot?

No, you only need to follow the included directions to access the network name and password. You only need to use your library card at the time you check out the hotspot.
